Romelu Lukaku is the Europa League player of the 2019/20 season. The Belgian striker put up a staggering number of goals for Inter this season. He scored 7 goals in 6 appearances in the Europa League.
The panel consisted of media moguls and coaches who picked the winners. The other finalists were Ever Banega and Bruno Fernandes.
Lukaku said the following in his acceptance speech,
“First of all, I thank God for having allowed me to come this far, for doing a job that I love, to play for a team that I have loved since I was a child.”
“I thank my mum, my brother, all those close to me, my agent, Roc Nation Sports for their support. I want to thank Antonio Conte, all his staff, and all those who work for the Club. Also, President Steven Zhang for the faith that they had in me and for having helped me this season. Finally, I want to thank all my teammates, who to me are like brothers, we are a true family.”
“I hope that this year we will do even better than last season and that we will share many successes together. Thank you, everyone!”
Lukaku set various club records, including the highest number of goals scored by an Inter player in a single season in Europe (9 – level with Roberto Boninsegna 1969/70 and Hernan Crespo in 2002/03), and the record for consecutive games with a goal in the UEFA Cup/Europa League (11), beating Alan Shearer (eight in 2005 with Newcastle).
