The Scudetto race has not gone the distance since the season of 2009/10, when Inter defeated Siena on Matchday 38 to win the title.
In all seasons since then, the Scudetto has already been decided before the last match kicked off thus the title winners playing for fun.
2010/11 – Milan win title with 2 matches to play
2011/12 – Juventus win title with 1 match to play
2012/13 – Juventus win title with 3 matches to play
2013/14 – Juventus win title with 2 matches to play
2014/15 – Juventus win title with 4 matches to play
2015/16 – Juventus win title with 3 matches to play
2016/17 – Juventus win title with 1 match to play
2017/18 – Juventus win title with 2 matches to play
2018/19 – Juventus win title with 5 matches to play
2019/20 – Juventus win title with 2 matches to play
2020/21 – Inter win title with 4 matches to play
With this in mind, it shows how competitive Italian football has been this campaign. Both Inter and Milan have been neck and neck for most of the season, and the finish line is only 90 minutes away.
On one hand Milan will travel to face Sassuolo, while Inter will host Sampdoria at San Siro. Whatever the result may be after this weekend, both times have been fantastic throughout.
The city of Milan is joyous again considering how long of a journey back to success it’s been for the Rossoneri and Nerazzurri.
Milan already completing their rebuild this season, with their first Champions League campaign in a decade. While Inter were forced into a rebuild since winning the Scudetto through the departures of Conte, Lukaku, Hakimi and Eriksen.
My heart says Inter will win the Scudetto on Sunday claiming their 20th title and second star on the jersey. However, my brain just tells me that fairytales belong in books and not in football.
As always, Forza Inter!
