Lautaro - Fiorentina

Inter have left their fans with chest pains after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Fiorentina. The Mkhitaryan winner coming in the 95th minute.

It wasn’t the greatest of matches as Fiorentina threatened to score on several occasions throughout the match. In comparison, Inter struggled defensively as Acerbi had his worst game in an Inter shirt. Some individual brilliance from Lautaro and Barella providing Inter with the much needed 3 points. I think Fiorentina would consider themselves unlucky not to grab a point, but this is football.

Let’s look further into the match itself.

Man of the Match!

A stunning performance from Inter’s number 10 – Lautaro Martinez. This has to be close to Lautaro’s greatest performance on a football field that I’ve seen. He was in everything during his time on the pitch as he finished with 2 goals and an assist.

It started in the second minute as Lautaro’s pinpoint through-ball put Barella in on goal. A delightful outside of the foot finish put Inter up 1-0 and added an assist to Lautaro’s tally for the season. That’s now his second for the season.

Only 12 minutes later, a beautiful piece of individual skill from Lautaro doubled Inter’s lead. Running at the defender, cutting to his weaker foot before burying the ball into the bottom right corner. A sublime finish from a player in the peak of his power.

For the rest of the match, Lautaro would continue to impress with long balls to switch play which is very uncharacteristic and something we didn’t know was in his repertoire. It really impressed myself as his distribution was top notch.

Finally, Lautaro’s last big moment of the match would come through gaining and scoring a penalty. A call which VAR had to overturn as Lautaro was aggressively taken down in the box after beating the keeper.

The Argentine stepped and make no mistake as he smoked the ball into the back of the net. A near impossible save from any keeper as it was hit with accuracy and power.

Overall, a 10/10 performance for me and only if he had not been subbed I’m confident he would’ve completed his hat-trick. Lautaro is now equal first in Serie A with 6 goals in 11 appearances.

Worrying?

We got the 3 points, but the style we got them in makes me a little concerned. I’ll give Inzaghi a pass on this as the team’s recent form warrants a slip up. Yes, we will still count a 4-3 victory as a slip up.

To win in an undeserved way against a solid team like Fiorentina is definitely lucky. Especially when the winner is a clearance hit straight into Mkhitaryan which then somehow makes it’s way into the goal. Absolutely comical but we’ll take it.

To beat Sassuolo and now Fiorentina away puts in a good place. We will need to also step up against Juventus in an away fixture a couple of weeks from now.

The real challenge will come in the midweek fixture to Viktoria Plzen. If these players can somehow take confidence from this performance, then I’m sure we can back it up against Plzen and get the job done.

This next week will tell us exactly where Inter’s season is headed. A win against Plzen will guarantee a place in the final 16 of the Champions League. After that, a win against Sampdoria in the league will keep us within striking distance of the Scudetto.

Where to next?

As mentioned, Viktoria Plzen is up next in four days from now. A sell out San Siro crowd will only take a victory so this club better be up for the challenge. A dominant win will put everyone’s mind at ease and as a fan after this Fiorentina match, I would love that.

Prediction: Inter 5-0
