Inter finished their 2019/20 Serie A season with a thumping 2-0 win over Atalanta. The win ensured 2nd place for Inter, leaving only 1 point shy from the title holders Juventus.

The Back-story

Soon after the victory, Coach Antonio Conte spoke to the media in his post-match conference. Conte criticized and said the management failed to back up the players and coaches.

“I don’t think they recognize the work of the players nor do I think my work has been recognized.”

He further claimed that the club provided no protection to the players. “We all received very little protection from the club, absolutely zero.”

“We have to grow and improve in all areas, including off the field, and a big club should protect its players more. We’ll discuss it all at the end of the season. I have to meet the President [Steven Zhang] but he’s in Chine right now” he added.

He also went on to say “I don’t like it when people jump on the bandwagon. They have to be there in the good times as well as the bad and here at Inter it wasn’t like that, I’m sorry to say.”

This is not the first time Conte has criticized Inter management. In November, he claimed that the planning was poor and the squad was small to challenge and compete for Serie A title and the champion’s league. However, the club responded immediately by signing several players in the January transfer window.

He concluded the interview and said “After the Europa League, we’ll make our judgments for next season. I’ll make my judgments, the club will make theirs.”

The Now

Coach Antonio Conte returned to Sky sports to clarify his post-match remarks and said: “I am part of a three-year project at Inter, and as I have always done in my life, I will fight with all my strengths and with all in my ability to make this a winning project.”

Earlier in the day, Gianluca Di Marzio said that Conte and Inter would part ways with a mutual agreement.

The relation has taken a massive downturn and the current turn of events added further misery to the situation. Di Marzio also said, only the president [Zhang] can fix this situation.

The Future

Conte has achieved quite a feat in his first season in charge. Conte’s side finished 2nd and subsequently cut the gap to Juventus from 21 points to one.

Inter hasn’t finished this high up the table since the 2011 season. However, the exit from Champion’s league and Coppa Italia was disappointing. The Europa league challenge will resume against Getafe and maybe a silver-lining is on the horizon for Conte and his men.

Rumors are circulating that Max Allegri is next in line to take the hot-seat at Inter should Conte resign or part ways with Inter.
