Inter beat Sassuolo 4-2 in last evening’s 35th-round fixture thanks to a phenomenal Romelu Lukaku performance. The Belgian forward scored a brace on his birthday which helped secure the victory. Lautaro Martinez added a goal and Tressoldi conceded an own goal.

Simone Inzaghi again rotated his squad with only Acerbi, Mkhitaryan, and Dimarco keeping their spot in the starting eleven compared to the Champions League win versus AC Milan. Regardless, Inter beat Sassuolo 4-2 with a very good overall performance. Inzaghi’s team started slowly conceding a couple of chances in front of Handanovic. Each of the two teams also had a goal rightfully disallowed due to offside. In the 41st minute, Romelu Lukaku scored a beautiful goal outside the box to give Inter the lead.

The second half started much better for the Nerrazuri who found themselves 3-0 up in just 13 minutes. First, after a dangerous cross by Bellanova, Tressoldi put the ball into his own net. Three minutes later, with the help of a deflection, Lautaro scored for 3-0. Sassuolo fought back with two goals from Henrique and Frattesi to put the pressure back on Inzaghi’s team. One minute before the end of the game, after a great team attack Romelu Lukaku scored his second goal, securing the victory.

That was only the second time in the last nine occasions that Inter beat Sassuolo at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez are returning to their best form. Lautaro has seven goals and three assists in the last eight games. Lukaku has five goals and three assists to his name for the same period of time. Inter has always been among the most offensive teams in the league but failed to win a lot of games due to poor finishing. Now, everything seems to be in the past in the most crucial part of the season.

This win is also very important in the fight for securing a top-four finish. Lazio only managed to get to a draw at home versus Lecce on Friday. On the other hand, AC Milan lost their away game versus Spezia yesterday. These results put Inter in third place with a four-point gap to the fifth – AC Milan. Today Juventus hosts Cremonese and AS Roma plays at Bologna in the other fixtures involving the teams, battling to secure a position among the best four.
