Handanovic spoke after the win against Sampdoria, and you could tell it was a bittersweet feeling to win the match but finish second.
“We’ve won two trophies and reached the last 16 of the Champions League. Unfortunately, we came unstuck in the league because we dropped some points on the way. They (AC Milan) were better. The league table doesn’t lie over 38 games.
“It’s very disappointing today, but the league is over now and we have to accept the way it’s gone and look ahead. I’d replay that month in which we played the two-legged tie against Liverpool. We went toe to toe with them, but when you lose these games, it can take a lot out of you physically and mentally.
“As a team we’ve and we’ve played some great football. We have worked hard and it’s a shame the way it’s finished in the league, but we’ve played 52 games, which is a huge number. We’ve always given everything and that’s key. I’m proud of the squad and these players. We have to keep going in the same vein. I’m ready for another season.”
Handanovic has had a mixed season, and he’s copped criticism from even the most loyal of fans. This does not take away from how fantastic Samir has been throughout his career. He may be near the end, but he has been a tremendous player over the years and one we should be proud to call capitano.
