Financial Fair Play Key Factor In Inter’s Champions League Exit

Inter left their fans in despair once again after plummeting out of Europe’s premier competition yesterday. The 1-1 draw with Dutch Champions PSV Eindhoven wasn’t enough to secure qualification and consequently landed Inter in the Europa League.

Tuttosport has gone on to report the detrimental effect of Financial Fair Play on Inter this season.

With Matias Vecino & Radja nainggolan plagued by injury, Luciano Spalletti had few back up options on his bench. Due to Joao Mario & Roberto Gagliardini both not included in Inter’s UEFA Champions League squad, Spalletti was left with in insanely thin squad when depth is such a key factor.

The lack of options forced Inter’s manager into deploying Antonio Candreva, a regular winger, as an attacking midfielder. Despite a decent enough effort, it simply didn’t stick for Inter yesterday in the middle of the park, with Marcello Brozovic left with too much to do on his own, not for the first time this season either.

These lack of options will no doubt highlight the need for another Central playmaker this January mercato. Let’s hope Beppe has his hunting goggles on.
