Inter saw their European campaign end as they failed to secure a win against Shakhtar. It was a do-or-die matchup for Inter to qualify for the next round.
Odds were in favor of Inter because Real Madrid took care of business against Gladbach. All Inter had to do was to win, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Coach Antonio Conte spoke to the media after the match and said:
“There’s a lot of regret, the team did everything they needed to win. Shakhtar did well and also had some good fortune. Their goalkeeper was the best player on the pitch.”
“I don’t feel like saying there was a lack of determination, focus, or aggression. Unfortunately, if you don’t score you don’t win”
“It’s incredible that we didn’t manage to score at least one goal over 180 minutes after dominating Shakhtar.”
Conte refused to take any responsibility for the disastrous CL campaign this season or showed any remorse. While he did condemn the referees and their decisions.
“We haven’t had much luck in the Champions League given certain incidents and refereeing decisions.”
“I think I can say that we were also penalized by VAR, with many incidents that went unanalyzed.”
Now the focus shifts towards Serie A. Conte must find a way to compete for the title.
