An underwhelming Inter draw away to Sampdoria

Inter - Sampdoria
Inter v Sampdoria - Barella argues with Lukaku.

A different fixture and another poor performance from Inter on the road to Sampdoria. The final score ending 0-0 with so many wasted chances.

An opposition which Inter should be absolutely annihilating, yet the mediocrity of this side was on show again. If we examine this Sampdoria team, who haven’t won a match in over a month, then we would see that Inter should’ve won comfortably.

It seem that 2022 was a year to beat the small teams then lose against the big teams, where 2023 is the complete opposite. Inter are just failing to secure 3 points against the teams at the opposite end of the table.

We know that before this match, the Nerazzurri hadn’t won away to Sampdoria since 2019. Even in the Conte winning season, Inter lost this away fixture. Although, this Sampdoria side are much worse than seasons gone.

Unfortunately the attitude of these Inter players seem to have been on the wrong page compared to their manager. As multiple opportunities were wasted and not capitalized on. A total of 18 shots with only 5 on target.

Let’s look further into the match itself.

Not many positives to point out as several individuals massively underperformed. The likes of Lukaku, Gosens, Barella and Darmian all looked a couple of steps off the pace and their touches really let us down when trying to build momentum.

For the first time this year, our best players were our back three and the keeper. De Vrij and Skriniar handled the Sampdoria attackers with ease while Acerbi had his busiest game in an Inter jersey.

The former Lazio man Acerbi replaced Bastoni in the starting lineup and played the position perfectly. He included himself in any plays along the left and went to the next level once Dimarco came on the pitch.

A sensational shot in injury time was nearly enough to secure 3 points for Inter, but the Sampdoria keeper was able to parry into the crossbar where the ball then travelled out for a corner. It was a stunning shot from Acerbi and very unlucky not to turn into a goal.

Finally to Onana, he didn’t have too much to do but any big chance he snuffed out without any issues. The earliest opportunity Sampdoria had was from a set piece where Onana came out and smashed the ball away from danger with his fists. We would see this become a huge confidence booster as Onana didn’t make any mistakes for the remainder of the match.

Where to next?

We are back at home which right now doesn’t really mean too much. We’ll face Udinese who haven’t beaten Inter away since 2017, so hopefully that statistic can keep building. Based on recent matches, it’s completely impossible to predict the winner.

A few days later the Champions League will be back. The first leg we are at home facing Porto, so hopefully we can get an important win there.

Prediction – Inter 1-0 Udinese
